7. WiMAX Client Platform Kit

7.1 Options

More and more WiMAX client platforms are being released.

WiMAX client platforms typically include devices, driver and management software and ongoing support arrangements.

Rutgers will procure as many WiMAX client platforms as possible, and integrate the most useful ones with the WiMAX Campus Deployment Kit. These will be "certified" for use with the GENI WiMAX campus deployment kit.

Rutgers will deliver a limited number of "certified" WiMAX client platforms to the campus deployment projects.

Issue: Which other campus projects could also evaluate and "certify" clients?

7.2 Plug-in WiMAX Client Devices for PCs and Tablets

7.2.1 USB Platforms

Several USB WiMAX client platforms have been introduced, and at relatively low prices.

The U210 from Accton Wireless Broadband Corp (Taiwan) is an attractive unit.

US210 USB Adapter
It is an IEEE 802.16e-2005 Wave 2 compliant device. Tests indicate that it performs well, and thus it has been "certifed" for use with the GENI WiMAX campus deployment kit.

7.2.2 ExpressCard Platforms

Several ExpressCard WiMAX client platforms have been introduced

The Samsung http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/mobile/mobile-phones/sprint-phones/SWC-E100ZKASPR/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail SWC-e100] has been certified by Sprint.

7.2.3 mini-PCIexpress Platforms

7.2.4 PCMCIA Platforms

7.2 PC and Tablets with Built-in WiMAX Clients

7.3 Handsets with Built-in WiMAX Clients

A handset with a built-in WiMAX client has been recently introduced by Samsung as the SWD-m100

7.4 Routers with Built-in WiMAX Clients

The Modacom URoad-5000 is a protable router, with a built-in WiMAX cleint to connect to the network, and a WiFi access point to serve nearby WiFi clients.

7.6 Client Platform Kit Integration and Deployment Plan

The second sets of kit hardware were ordered in 2009 and will be delivered in 2010, as part of Spiral 2:

Kit Ordered Received Integrated Delivered Where Note
2.1 12/17/09 plan 5/15/10 ? ? NEC Labs America ?
2.2 12/17/09 plan 5/15/10 ? ? Columbia University ?
2.3 12/17/09 plan 5/15/10 ? ? Polytechnic Institute of NYU ?
2.4 12/17/09 plan 5/15/10 ? ? UCLA ?
2.5 12/17/09 plan 5/15/10 ? ? University of Colorado at Boulder ?
2.6 12/17/09 plan 5/15/10 ? ? UMass Amherst ?
2.7 12/17/09 plan 5/15/10 ? ? University of Wisconsin ?

Issue: It has been planned that three kits will be delivered during Spiral 2, and the remaining four during Spiral 3. It has been planned that the first three kits will be delivered to campuses/sites where there is easy access for support, i.e., at nearby locations: NEC Labs America, Columbia University, and Polytechnic Institute of NYU. However, it would also make sense to deliver a kit ONLY when the campus/site has received an FCC license, and is ready to install the kit. Thus, the delivery sequence may also depend on campus status. It is expected that a third sets of kit hardware will be ordered in 3/2010 and will be delivered in ?, for those campuses not included in the Spiral 2 projects, or for campuses that want to install additional kits.

Kit Ordered Received Integrated Delivered Where Note
3.1 3/10 ? ? ? BBN Technologies ?
3.2 3/10 ? ? ? University of Wisconsin, 2nd site? ?
3.3 3/10 ? ? ? ? ?
3.4 3/10 ? ? ? ? ?
3.5 3/10 ? ? ? ? ?

Rutgers will deliver a limited number of "certified" WiMAX client platforms to the campus deployment projects.

Current plan: Each campus receives x10 USB Clients, e.g., AWB U210.
