B. Deliverables made

II. Description of work performed during last quarter

In the 1st quarter of 2011, the requirements to install the NEC WiMAX base station on the roof of the Waisman Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been completed and the base station is currently operational at that location. The project team has worked with worked with Plant Management to install a pole for the antenna, a rack for the indoor unit, a guard for the wires to the outdoor unit, and the mounting of the outdoor unit. DoIT, the network infrastructure management entity, completed a fiber run to the roof to the Waisman Center and located a fiber path to the WiNGS laboratory, where the connection to L2 internet access is nearby.

As soon as all of installation requirements were completed, the base station was installed and tested for connectivity and bandwidth. The connectivity tests proved fairly trivial, because of the experimental tests that were conducted previously when the WiMAX base station was setup in the WiNGS lab. However, the bandwidth tests are still underway, and we have seen peek values of approximately 12mbps and average values of approximately 3-4mbps.

Working with Madison Metro Transit, the WiRover system has been a great success. Our current capability with the Cisco base station will be extended to the NEC base station in the near future. Also, we plan to roll out 3 more buses, which consists of 2 city buses and 1 coach bus, in addition to the 3 we already have installed.

The approval for the Helen C. White building is underway for the 2nd NEC base station, which would extend our coverage for the WiRover system.

A. Activities and findings

The project has led to a deployment of two WiMAX systems in the UW-Madison campus (one from Cisco and the other from NEC). Two experimenters have now been enabled on these systems --- Madison Metro and Van Galder Bus, two local bus operators who are using WiMAX connectivity to provide Internet access services on their buses. Hundreds of users on these buses are using these systems daily and they are providing real user participation in this GENI experimentation platform. Surveys from the users and the user experience are available with the PIs and will be published in the near future.

B. Project participants

In UW-Madison --- Joshua Hare, Lance Hartung, Wes Miller, and Derek Meyer

C. Publications (individual and organizational)

Can They Hear Me Now? A Crowd-sourced Approach to Monitoring Wide-area Wireless Networks. Sayandeep Sen, Jongwon Yoon, Joshua Hare, Justin Ormont, Suman Banerjee. (Work under submission in May 2011)

D. Outreach activities

E. Collaborations

  • Collaborations are ongoing with two local bus operators:
    1. Madison Metro Transit --- which operates city transit services in and around Madison, WI; and,
    2. Van Galder Bus --- which operates buses on various long distance routes between Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago, and Minneapolis.

Both these partners are using our WiMAX and in-vehicle node deployment to provide Internet services to their vehicles and passengers with great success and evaluating them for larger scale deployments.

F. Other Contributions

We are also collecting a large volume of user performance data on Internet access services from moving vehicles. This performance data will be published soon.
