II. Description of work performed during last quarter

In the 1st quarter of 2011, the requirements to install the NEC WiMAX base station on the roof of the Waisman Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been completed and the base station is currently operational at that location. The project team has worked with worked with Plant Management to install a pole for the antenna, a rack for the indoor unit, a guard for the wires to the outdoor unit, and the mounting of the outdoor unit. DoIT, the network infrastructure management entity, completed a fiber run to the roof to the Waisman Center and located a fiber path to the WiNGS laboratory, where the connection to L2 internet access is nearby.

As soon as all of installation requirements were completed, the base station was installed and tested for connectivity and bandwidth. The connectivity tests proved fairly trivial, because of the experimental tests that were conducted previously when the WiMAX base station was setup in the WiNGS lab. However, the bandwidth tests are still underway, and we have seen peek values of approximately 12mbps and average values of approximately 3-4mbps.

Working with Madison Metro Transit, the WiRover system has been a great success. Our current capability with the Cisco base station will be extended to the NEC base station in the near future. Also, we plan to roll out 3 more buses, which consists of 2 city buses and 1 coach bus, in addition to the 3 we already have installed.

The approval for the Helen C. White building is underway for the 2nd NEC base station, which would extend our coverage for the WiRover system.
