The GENI Research and Educational Experiment Winter Camp (GREE-WC 2014)

Theme: GENI as a Platform for Cloud Computing Research

January 8 -11, Boston MA

Overview

The Global Environment for Network Innovation (GENI) infrastructure is becoming a mature virtual laboratory for exploring future Internet at-scale. It supports at-scale experimentation on shared and heterogeneous GENI resources among multiple users, permits users deep programmability throughout the network, and offers collaborative and exploratory environments for innovative research and education. More and more researchers, educators, and students have started or are starting to conduct research and educational experiments on the GENI infrastructure. The GENI project is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is free to use for research and education. Please see http://www.geni.net for more information.

The theme for this camp will be GENI as a platform for cloud computing research. GENI may be viewed as a collection of clouds distributed across the United States that are connected by national research backbone networks such as Internet2 and National Lambda Rail. GENI therefore enables experimentation with distributed clouds. Cloud-research relevant topics to be covered at this camp include OpenFlow and Hadoop-style experiments on GENI.

The camp is suitable for those who have never used GENI and those with some GENI experience looking to further develop their knowledge of GENI. The camp will start with introductory tutorials on using GENI and GENI tools such as the GENI Portal, Flack, LabWiki and GIMI. Over the course of the camp participants will form teams to define a research project that requires experimentation with GENI.

This is the third GREE camp and follows two successful summer camps at the Rochester Institute Technology (RIT) and University of Connecticut in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Final project presentations from these camps can be found at http://groups.geni.net/geni/wiki/GENIExperimenter/GENISummerCamp and http://groups.geni.net/geni/wiki/APRAGENI/GREE-SC2013.
