S3MONITOR Project Status Report

Period: July 2011 to November 2011

Title: Scalable, Extensible, and Safe Monitoring of GENI Clusters

Authors:

Sonia Fahmy, Purdue University

I. Major accomplishments

A. Milestones achieved

We have worked with the INSTOOLS team to integrate the new version of the Scalable Sensing Service sensor pods with extensible ("pluggable") sensors into their system. The extended INSTOOLS that includes our sensor pods was demonstrated at GEC 12.

We have developed a plan for courseware that uses GENI.

B. Deliverables made

The extended INSTOOLS that includes our sensor pods was demonstrated at GEC 12 in Kansas City, MO.

An initial plan for courseware that leverages GENI infrastructure and tools was completed.

II. Description of work performed since last report

A. Activities and findings

We have summarized the design and evaluation of the Scalable Sensing Service on GENI and submitted it for publication in the proceedings of COMSNETS 2012 (see C below).

We have worked with the INSTOOLS team to integrate the new version of the Scalable Sensing Service sensor pods with extensible ("pluggable") sensors into their system. We will continue to work with them to complete the integration by next March.

We have developed a plan for courseware that uses GENI. This entailed surveying several GENI tools and understanding how well they can fit into a class project.

B. Project participants

Sonia Fahmy, Ethan Blanton, Sriharsha Gangam, Purdue University
Puneet Sharma, HP Labs
Sumit Kala, Sarbajit Chatterjee, Deepti Sharma, Prasanthi Gaddam, HP

C. Publications (individual and organizational)

Ethan Blanton, Sarbajit Chatterjee, Sriharsha Gangam, Sumit Kala, Deepti Sharma, Sonia Fahmy, Puneet Sharma. "Design and Evaluation of the S3 Monitor Network Measurement Service on GENI." 10 pp. Accepted for publication in the Proceedings of COMSNETS 2012.

D. Outreach activities

Sonia Fahmy is serving as an Area technical program committee (TPC) chair for IEEE INFOCOM 2012. Puneet Sharma is serving on the TPC of IEEE INFOCOM 2012.

Sonia Fahmy participated in the 12th GENI Engineering Conference in Kansas City, MO, in November 2011, and in the IEEE INFOCOM TPC meeting in New York, NY, in November 2011.

E. Collaborations

We participated in almost all bi-weekly ProtoGENI conference calls held since January 2010.

During GEC 12, Sonia Fahmy had several interactions and discussions with PIs of other GENI projects, especially James Griffioen and Prasad Calyam. She also had several discussions with US IGNITE poster presenters.
