S3MONITOR Project Status Report

Period: November 2011 to March 2012

Title: Scalable, Extensible, and Safe Monitoring of GENI Clusters

Authors:

Sonia Fahmy, Purdue University

I. Major accomplishments

A. Milestones achieved

We have worked with the InstrumentationTools team to integrate the new version of the Scalable Sensing Service sensor pods with extensible ("pluggable") sensors into their system. A demo of InstrumentationTools integrated with sensor pods can be viewed at: http://groups.geni.net/geni/attachment/wiki/ScalableMonitoring/demo-subtitles.mp4

We have completed the first programming exercise for graduate students using GENI.

B. Deliverables made

The extended InstrumentationTools that includes our sensor pods was demonstrated at GEC 13. A demo of InstrumentationTools integrated with sensor pods can be viewed at: http://groups.geni.net/geni/attachment/wiki/ScalableMonitoring/demo-subtitles.mp4

The first programming exercise for graduate students using GENI is complete.

II. Description of work performed since last report

A. Activities and findings

We have presented our work on the design and evaluation of the Scalable Sensing Service on GENI at COMSNETS 2012 (see C below), and our work on exercises for graduate students using GENI at GREE12 (see C below).

B. Project participants

Sonia Fahmy, Ethan Blanton, Sriharsha Gangam, Purdue University
Puneet Sharma, HP Labs
Sumit Kala, Sarbajit Chatterjee, Deepti Sharma, Prasanthi Gaddam, HP

C. Publications (individual and organizational)

D. Outreach activities

Sonia Fahmy is serving as an Area technical program committee (TPC) chair for IEEE INFOCOM 2012. Puneet Sharma is serving on the TPC of IEEE INFOCOM 2012.

Sonia Fahmy participated in the 13th GENI Engineering Conference in Los Angeles, CA, in March 2012, and presented the paper in C above at the First GENI Research and Educational Experiment Workshop (GREE12).

Puneet Sharma presented the paper in C above at the COMSNETS conference in January 2012 and discussed the work with conference participants.

E. Collaborations

We participated in almost all bi-weekly ProtoGENI conference calls held since January 2010.

During GEC 13, Sonia Fahmy had several interactions and discussions with PIs of other GENI projects, especially James Griffioen and Prasad Calyam.
