S3MONITOR Project Status Report

Period: November 2010 to March 2011

Title: Scalable, Extensible, and Safe Monitoring of GENI Clusters

Authors:

Sonia Fahmy, Purdue University
Puneet Sharma, HP Labs

  1. Major accomplishments
  1. Milestones achieved

We have completed a new version 1.0 of the Scalable Sensing Service system, and demonstrated it at GEC 10.

We have developed a script and documentation to make the installation process smoother, based on feedback from Luisa Nevers at BBN.

We have started planning for deployments spanning the ProtoGENI, PlanetLab, and ORCA control frameworks.

We have completed several performance tests of our system.

  1. Deliverables made

Version 1.0 of the system, and its installation and usage instructions was completed. The project web page that includes links to download the code and the installation/user guides can be found at:

http://illusion.hpl.hp.com/genis3monitor/

A demo portal to the system has been deployed at:

http://mirage.hpl.hp.com:8080/s3monitor/login.jsp

We have completed initial performance tests of our system. Version 1.0 of our performance evaluation report can be found at:

During GEC 10 in March 2011, Puneet Sharma and Sonia Fahmy participated in the meeting of the measurements working group, and gave a demo during the GEC evening demo session.

  1. Description of work performed since last report
  1. Activities and findings

Version 1.0 was completed. The version includes the following features:

  1. Adding option to upload manifest
  2. Adding an administrator interface to manage user accounts
  3. Improved user interface
  4. Improved code organization
  5. Deployment on Planetlab nodes

We have completed an installation guide and user guide for the system and portal.

We have completed an initial report on the performance evaluation of the system. This includes measuring network, CPU, and disk overhead.

Sonia Fahmy is serving as an Area TPC chair for INFOCOM 2011, INFOCOM 2012, and ICNP 2011. She is serving on TPC of CSET 2011. Puneet Sharma is serving on the TPCs of IEEE INFOCOM 2011 and ICNP 2011 TPC, and is the co-Chair of the Energy Efficient Networking Track at IEEE ICCCN 2011.

The HP Labs team attended the IEEE GLOBECOM conference in December and presented the paper mentioned in C above.

  1. Collaborations

We participated in almost all bi-weekly Cluster C conference calls held since January 2010.

During GEC 10, Sonia Fahmy and Puneet Sharma had several interactions and discussions with potential collaborators for use and deployment of S3Monitor in other GENI projects.
