S3MONITOR Project Status Report
Period: March 2011 to July 2011
Title: Scalable, Extensible, and Safe Monitoring of GENI Clusters
Authors:
Sonia Fahmy, Purdue University
Puneet Sharma, HP Labs
I. Major accomplishments
A. Milestones achieved
We are finalizing a new version of the Scalable Sensing Service system with extensible ("pluggable") sensors and the notion of "groups." The version also includes other improvements. It was demonstrated at GEC 11.
We released the revised user guide, installation guide, and specifications and integration plan.
B. Deliverables made
The user guide was released and is available at: http://mirage.hpl.hp.com/s3monitor/doc/s3monitor-userguide.pdf
The installation guide was released and is available at: http://mirage.hpl.hp.com/s3monitor/doc/s3monitor-installationguide.pdf
During GEC 11 in July 2011, Sonia Fahmy and Ethan Blanton participated in the meeting of the measurements working group. Sumit Kala gave a demo during the GEC evening poster session, and the group presented a poster. The poster can be found at: http://groups.geni.net/geni/attachment/wiki/ScalableMonitoring/gec11-onepage.pdf
The Specifications and Integration Plan document was released and is available at: http://groups.geni.net/geni/attachment/wiki/ScalableMonitoring/s3specs.pdf
II. Description of work performed since last report
A. Activities and findings
We installed a bug tracker at http://s3trac.cs.purdue.edu/trac/login so that the GENI project office, other GENI projects, and our own team members can report bugs. We use the system to report when bugs are resolved. We have been using the system and resolving reported bugs.
We revised the installation guide and user guides.
We are planning integration with the instrumentation tools and measurement data archive projects. We released a specifications and integration plan document.
B. Project participants
Sonia Fahmy, Ethan Blanton, Sriharsha Gangam, Purdue University

D. Outreach activities
Sonia Fahmy is serving as an Area TPC chair for INFOCOM 2012 and ICNP
- She served on TPC of CSET 2011. Puneet Sharma is serving on
the INFOCOM 2012 and ICNP 2011 TPCs, and is the co-Chair of the Energy Efficient Networking Track at IEEE ICCCN 2011.
Sriharsha Gangam attended IWQoS in San Jose, CA, in June 2011, and presented the paper mentioned in C above.
E. Collaborations
We participated in almost all bi-weekly ProtoGENI conference calls held since January 2010.
We participated in the I&M working group call held in July 2011.
During GEC 11, Sonia Fahmy, Ethan Blanton, and Sumit Kala had several interactions and discussions with potential collaborators for integration and deployment of S3Monitor in other GENI projects.
