ExptsSecurity Project Status Report

Title: GENI Experiments for Traffic Capture Capabilities and Security Requirement Analysis

Period: First quarter 2010

Authors: Xiaoyan Hong, Fei Hu, Yang Xiao, University of Alabama

I. Major accomplishments

A. Milestones achieved

We achieved the milestone ExptsSec: S2.b for this period, which includes reporting on the initial experimentation on ProtoGENI and on the revised experiment design. No software/scripts are generated during this period.

B. Deliverables made

The deliverables made in this period include:

(1) Presentation at the GEC7 to report our initial experiments and corresponding security vulnerabilities investigated in the experiments.

(2) Document reporting the initial experiments based on the Milestone ExptsSec: S2.a design document and the initial findings on the corresponding security vulnerabilities.

(3) Revised experimentation plans based on interaction with Rob and Vic in February.

II. Description of work performed during last quarter

A. Activities and findings

We have run several experiments designed in Milestone 1. We tried to install our own virtual machine to testing security breaches. We also analyzed some of the test scripts for potential experiments. We have used the geni-user mailing-list to interact with ProtoGENI technical personals to solve several problems in our experiments. The results and findings are reported in GEC7 presentation and in a separate document. ExptsSec-initialExpts-findings.pdf

We held a telecom with Rob and Vic in February to discuss the experiment design documentation and revised the experiment design documentation based on the feedback.

The PIs and participating students held regular meetings to discuss experiment activates, related security issues and ProtoGENI functions. These meetings also discussed the document on the initial experiments and findings, which is delivered. We also read a few new GENI and ProtoGENI documents when they are posted.

PI Xiaoyan Hong and a graduate student Dawei Li attended GEC7 in March 2010, at Duke University, NC. We applied and obtained a travel grant for Dawei Li to go to GEC7.

B. Project participants

Xiaoyan Hong (PI)
Fei Hu (Co-PI)
Yang Xiao (Co-PI)
Jingcheng Gao (Graduate student)
Anil Garimidi (Graduate student)
Dawei Li (Graduate student)
Dong Zhang (Graduate student)

C. Publications (individual and organizational)

D. Outreach activities

We are offering a graduate seminar course on EMULAB and ProtoGENI. We are providing a course project in an upper level networking class.

This project was reported on the newspaper "Crimson White" of the University of Alabama on February 11, 2010.

E. Collaborations

We participated in all conference-calls since January 2010.

At the Seventh GENI Engineering Conference in Mar 2010, we discussed about our project with the people from some of the measurement and tool projects such as University of Kentucky, Purdue University, and the Ohio State University. The measurement tools could be used in our experiments when they are available.

We also discussed our project with early experiment teams and programmable network node teams on experiment features.
