= VMI-FED Project Status Report = Period: July 1 – November 18, 2010 (Post GEC9) =Overview= This QSR documents the progress by the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) for Project Number 1773, Virtual Machine Introspection (VMI) and Development of a Model Federation Framework (MFF) for GENI, a.k.a. VMI-FED. We successfully demonstrated VMI functionality on an instance of the ORCA control framework at the ninth GENI Engineering Conference (GEC9). In addition, we have posted documentation describing our findings and approach to federating new and diverse resources uniformly and on a large scale, as well as identifying numerous potential resources that can be federated which are available to the University of Alaska (UA). == I. Major accomplishments == === A. Milestones achieved === Our team submitted two Spiral 3 proposals, one of which is a joint venture with another project that is duplicating the Advanced System Security Education, Research, and Training (ASSERT) Center in multiple locations. This proposal would allot for the installation of additional GENI equipment at each of the previously mentioned locations. The second submitted proposal regards providing training to GENI experimenters. Furthermore, new graduate student projects have formed around the FED portion of the project relating to standardizing resource classifications in large-scale networks, and trading resources for services in large-scale networks. === B. Deliverables made === (07/21/10) VMI-FED: S2.c GEC8 demo - Demonstration at GEC8 showing VMI running on cluster nodes in a lab environment at the University of Alaska (UA). (09/01/10) VMI-FED: S2.e GENI VMI demo - Demonstration of initial VMI functionality on GENI cluster nodes. (11/04/10) VMI-FED: S2.f scale up demo - Demonstration at GEC8 showing VMI running on multiple ORCA cluster nodes. (07/15/10) VMI-FED: S2.d resource doc – Documentation of the new and diverse resources that could be federated into GENI which are available at the University of Alaska. (09/30/10) VMI-FED: S2.g analysis doc – Documentation of our findings and approach to federating new and diverse resources uniformly and on a large scale. == II. Description of work performed during last quarter == === A. Activities and findings === Dr. Kara Nance, Dr. Brian Hay, and John Quan submitted a paper about trading services for resources in large-scale networks. Inspiration for this paper based on the need to promote real world uses for GENI, and to increase opt-in user federation and experimentation in GENI. Don Kline and John Quan have nearly completed a paper about standardizing resource classifications in large-scale networks. Inspiration for this paper follows directly from the findings in the documentation posted in the final spiral 2 deliverable made on 9/30/10. Initial prototyping, and design changes of the classification schema described in the Model Federation Framework documentation. Completed Eucalyptus 1.6 install on one UAF server. Still installing ORCA 2.1 on another server. === B. Outreach activities === Dr. Nance and Dr. Hay discussed GENi fitting into the goals of NSA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at a jointly sponsored National Centers of Academic Excellence in IA Education (CAE/IAE) and CAE-Research (CAE-R) program in November in Pittsburg. The goal of these programs is to reduce vulnerability in our national information infrastructure by promoting higher education and research in IA and producing a growing number of professionals with IA expertise in various disciplines. === E.
