OFUWI Project Status Report
Period: Ending GEC14
I. Major accomplishments
A. Milestones achieved
- S4.b Upgrade and integrate OpenFlow and GENI aggregate software and firmware: We are running the latest versions of FOAM, FlowVisor, and OpenFlow firmware recommended by the GPO
- S4.c Support regular multisite experiments (Due 08/31/12): We have had individuals from other sites run multi-site experiments on our infrastructure at several points during Spiral 4.
- S4.d Document, monitor and support the University of Wisconsin aggregates: All GENI wiki pages concerning the WisconsinOpenflow? and WisconsinMyPlc? aggregates are up to date. Additionally, all aggregates are appropriately reporting to GMOC monitoring infrastructure.
B. Deliverables made
See Publications below.
II. Description of work performed during last quarter
A. Activities and findings
Several external experiments have leveraged GENI resources at UW-Madison. The resources have also continued to be used for projects at UW-Madison, including CloudNaaS---a framework for creating rich virtual networks in cloud environments---and ECOS---an enterprise centric offloading system that addresses the security and scalability roadblocks in leveraging mobile application offloading in enterprises. Publications are these works ate listed below.
We have (i) striven to provide high availability, responding quickly to outages, (ii) maintained an up-to-date software stack (FOAM, FlowVisor, OpenFlow firmware, and MyPLC), and (iii) improved our administration of the infrastructure over time.
We are currently planning a reconfiguration of the network to create a small data center tree topology for ongoing research in private and cloud data centers. This will enable use to have complete control of the entire network stack (physical through application layers). This testbed will be useful for evaluating new approaches to reducing flow completion times with MapReduce-like workloads and evaluating new SDN-like frameworks for supporting rich middlebox deployments. We expect this topology will prove useful for external researchers as well.
We are also discussing the creation of GENI racks in partnership with Cisco Systems.
