Major Accomplishments
Milestones
Initial integration with AM and other campuses: We deployed a Expedient and Opt-In manager instance connected to the IU Flowvisor. This deployment was successfully used as part of the GENI for Everyone demo. The demonstration showed that a rather complex OpenFlow topology (3 Openflow enabled switches over 2 campuses) could be utilized for external experiments. There were issues with slice creation on the MyPLC nodes in Bloomington because of issues with the nodemanager code crashing on the Planetlab hosts but this was not realted to the core OpenFlow deployment.
Expand Indiana University OF deployment: We deployed a NetGear switch in the IU Bloomington Telecommunication Services building to allow additional engineers to participate in the OpenFlow network. It also gives an opportunity to discover issues with operating a multi-vendor environment. We have also purchased a NetFPGA 1G and 10G cards to assist in the creation of new production applications.
Deleverables
Measurement Manager: The Measurement Manager was originally deployed and demonstrated at GEC9. This software capture information about the state of the OpenFlow infrastructure including topology, utilization and configuration of each OpenFlow aggregate. It also captures information thorough the FlowVisor API about the configuration and use of each slice. The collected information can be used by the experimenter, GENI operator or the aggregate owner to monitor and capture information about the experiments and the state of the infrastructure.
For GEC10 we demonstrated additional monitoring with Nagios montoring of connectivity to campuses using the GENI for Everyone Demo and vlan 3715 and 3716 across the backbone networks. OpenFlow Aggregate and port statistics are also captured utilizing the statistics.
Currently data is being collected from the IU, National Lambda Rail and Internet2 OpenFlow networks
More information about the Measurement Manager is at: Measurement Manager
Currently a number of Measurement Manager output formats are used to drive data collection. The Measurement Manager generates configuration for measurement, monitoring and collection of topology information. Some of the live data from the GENI OpenFlow infrastructure is linked below.

Description of Work Performed During Last Quarter
Activities and Findings
LoadBalancer: We have begun initial requirement gathering, design and experimentation for the creation of a loadbalancer application that utilizes OpenFlow switches. The initial deployment will allow Indiana University to distribute traffic to multiple Intrusion Detection System devices. The initial design for a custom OpenFlow app that divides the traffic and provides a simple Web interface to control traffic. We plan to have this deployed in Production by the end of the summer.
We have started discussions with Clemson on collaboration to develop the application jointly.
We are also looking at possible applications beyond the Intrusion Detection use which will require a much larger production deployment of Openflow devices.
Production Deployment: We have developed procedures and documentation for managing OpenFlow networks. We have developing applications such as the Measurement Manager to monitor and manage production networks. We have deployed and packaged the various OpenFlow tools to make it much simpler to distribute OpenFlow, Nox, Flowvisor to a new device and stand up a OpenFlow deployment. We are working on final documentation to help campuses or others deploying a OpenFlow network for the first time get started quickly and easily
