LAMP Project Status Report

Period: Jan 2011 - Mar 2011

I. Major accomplishments

A. Milestones achieved

  • Completed S3.d and S3.e milestones.

B. Deliverables made

  • Demonstrated LAMP system for experimenters at GEC10.
  • Updated documentation for LAMP perfSONAR Skeleton

II. Description of work performed during last quarter

A. Activities and findings

Activity: Discussions with I&M WG and Utah’s ProtoGENI team regarding measurement and topology representation (RSpec).
Findings:

  • Martin Swany gave a presentation on UNIS at RSpec Meeting at GEC10. A general consensus has been reached that the ProtoGENI RSpec will be adopted as the general RSpec within GENI. There was recognition of the fact that the core RSpec cannot currently represent all current and future use-cases and that the core specification should remain easily extensible using a namespacing extension mechanism.
  • Martin Swany served on the I&M WG panel. No general consensus was reached. The perfSONAR measurement schema was discussed as a likely contender to provide a common measurement representation across CFs.

Activity: Network monitoring of the ProtoGENI backbone using perfSONAR.
Findings:

  • This service has been working continuously since the last quarter.
  • We plan to expand the monitoring to include the newly added ProtoGENI backbone nodes at additional I2 POPs.
  • There has been a modest increase in monitored use as some experiments begin to run across the backbone nodes.

Activity: Development of a perfSONAR-based I&M system for GENI experimenters.
Findings:

  • The latest LAMP developments were presented at the GEC10 Demo Session
    • LAMP I&M "Portal" to control active and passive measurements
    • Complete host monitoring
    • Experiment topology visualization
    • Mapping measurements to interactive topology
    • Cross-CM measurements with stitching between Utah and Kentucky nodes

B. Project participants

The following are active participants in the project:

  • Martin Swany – PI
  • Eric Boyd – Co-PI
  • Guilherme Fernandes – Research Assistant
  • Ezra Kissel – Research Assistant
  • Jason Zurawski - Internet2

C. Publications (individual and organizational)

No publications done so far.

D. Outreach activities

  • Engaged w/ RENCI researchers on integrating measurement

infrastructure into the LAMP perfSONAR Skeleton

  • Engaged with experimenters attending the 1st Doctoral Consortium
    • Demonstrated and discussed the use of LAMP I&M within experiments

E. Collaborations

Collaborations are ongoing with Utah’s ProtoGENI Team, the Instrumentation Tools project from the University of Kentucky, and GENI’s I&M Working Group. Further collaborations are expected with other I&M projects of Cluster C.

F. Other Contributions

None.
