Open vSwitch Installation on ProtoGENI hosts

This page describes how to install Open vSwitch (OVS) on a ProtoGENI host running an Ubuntu image. There are two different ways to use OVS within ProtoGENI.

  1. Use the Image. This Image only works with , so if there are not nodes available you might
  • Download OVS
     tar xvfz openvswitch-1.7.3.tar.gz
     cd openvswitch-1.7.3
  • Follow the instructions at INSTALL.Linux
    • Install the prerequisets:
      run apt-get update
      sudo apt-get -y install pkg-config libssl-dev libc-dev
    • Compile and install
       sudo make install
    • Initialize the configuration database using ovsdb-tool
      sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/etc/openvswitch
      sudo ovsdb-tool create /usr/local/etc/openvswitch/conf.db vswitchd/vswitch.ovsschema
    • Startup
      sudo ovsdb-server --remote=punix:/usr/local/var/run/openvswitch/db.sock \
                     --remote=db:Open_vSwitch,manager_options \
                     --private-key=db:SSL,private_key \
                     --certificate=db:SSL,certificate \
                     --bootstrap-ca-cert=db:SSL,ca_cert \
                     --pidfile --detach
      sudo ovs-vsctl --no-wait init
      sudo ovs-vswitchd --pidfile --detach
