[https://genidesktop.netlab.uky.edu Back to GENIDesktop] [[PageOutline]] = __FAQ__ = === 1. I see a message "Failed to logon to the Genidesktop" when using my [https://portal.geni.net Geni Portal] login ?[[BR]] === Make sure you can login to the GENI Portal and the GENI Portal is not under maintenance.[[BR]] If you need additional assistance , please email genidesktop-admins@netlab.uky.edu[[BR]] [[BR]][[BR]] === 2. After login , i see some of my slices , but not all of them. === Make sure your have all the relevant checkboxes checked under "Work With Your Slices" on the Slice List page [[br]] [[BR]][[Image(wiki:GD:slicelist_checkboxes.png,25%,align=left)]] [[BR]] In the above screenshot, "Mine" refers to all slice created by you whereas "Others" refers to all slices * on which you have been designated as a member you the original creator, * or assigned the role of an "Project Admin" which automatically makes you a member of all slices created by any member of the project your belong to. [[BR]] [[BR]] === 3. Problem allocating resources to my slice. What do I do ? === This could be due to a variety of reasons. The GENIDesktop does provide a detailed log of the actions performed. Please go through the last few lines of the log. You may able to figure out the problem. You may also be provided with an error URL in the log that can copy off and send to the GENI Users google group mailing list for help if the message does not make sense to you. [[BR]] [[BR]] === 4. Adding a Global Node (problems ?) === Again this could be due to a variety of reasons. For example, the InstaGENI rack may not have more memory or disk space to create any more VMs. Another major problem that is encountered is is lack of free Routable IP addresses which is required by the Global Node. You can use the GENI Monitoring system for find rack that satisfies your requirement. [https://genimon.uky.edu/status] . In particular look for an Instageni rack that is available and has the least number of VMs allocated and at least some Routable IP available. [[BR]] [[BR]] === 5. I see the message "There is an error in your slice". What do I do ? === Please be patient and wait for at least 5 minutes. Occasionally the InstageRack is too busy to respond to status queries from the GENIDesktop. The GENIDesktop tries its best to get the status by using a backoff polling mechanism. Things may resume even after you see this error. If workflow does not proceed even after 5 minutes. Please logout of the GENIDesktop and wait for around 15 minutes and try to login and proceed again. If you still do not see productive results, please contact us at genidesktop-admins@netlab.uky.edu so that we may help you out. You may also cc, the GENI Users's mailing list (google group) and others who may have seen the same issue may be able to help you even before we do. [[BR]] [[BR]] === 6. How do i renew (or edit Slice Membership) my slice ? === [[BR]][[Image(wiki:GD:adv1.png,25%)]] [[BR]] Select the "Advanced" checkbox to display more options. [[BR]][[Image(wiki:GD:adv2.png,25%)]] [[BR]] * Renew Slice (and slivers) : Click on "Renew" button and increase the number of days as per your requirement. * View/Edit Slice Membership : Click on "Members" button to view the current slice members. If you would like to make any changes, please make the appropriate selections for each user and Click on "Submit Changes". If you have just added new members to your slice, either you will need to logout of the GENIDesktop and log back in for the new user to use your slice in the GENIDesktop or then the new user themselves can just re-login to the GENIDesktop. [[BR]] [[BR]] === 7. Collaborating with other members of a slice in the GENIDesktop === To get your GENIDesktop slice page may require some GENI API operation that require the slice to change state. This may confuse other members of the slice who are currently logged on to the GENIDesktop. If you have multiple members in your slice with whom you are working and require all of them using the GENIDesktop at the same time, we ask that you speak to your slice members and co-ordinate your effort. You should not experience any downtime while the GENI Operations occur. [[BR]] [[BR]] === 8. My SSH windows and graphs don't show up/work === Did you see a pop up tab/window in your browser before you were taken to the GENIDesktop page with the graph and SSH menus. If not, then you may have to disable the popup-blocker or add exception to allow popups from https://genidesktop.netlab.uky.edu in your browser. [[br]] || In Google Chrome || || [[Image(wiki:GD:chrome-popup.png)]] || [[BR]] || In Mozilla Firefox || || [[Image(wiki:GD:firefox-popup.png)]] || Once you set the option to allow pop-up from the https://genidesktop.netlab.uky.edu , you should see new browser window/tab that asks you to accept a self-signed certificate like show below. The GENIDesktop services run on the GDGN Node using an web server running on https. The certificates used to be accepted by you when presented in the browser. || In Google Chrome || || [[Image(wiki:GD:chrome-cert.png,50%)]] [[br]] Click on "Advanced", and then on "Proceed to ..." || [[BR]] || In Mozilla Firefox || || [[Image(wiki:GD:firefox-sslcert.png,50%)]][[br]] Click on "Advanced", and then on "Add Exception ..." || You may see multiple pages like these , one from each Global Node (or GN Node) if your slice has nodes from multiple aggregates (AM) . You have to accept each one of them (Self signed cert pages). If you know that you have already accepted these pages and still have problems please email genidesktop-admins@netlab.uky.edu for help. If you missed or cannot see the pages to accept the Self Signed certificate messages, launch the SSH module (button) as a workaround which would force the page. Make sure to watch for it this time. [[BR]] [[BR]] === 9. Can I download my graph data (as CSV/RRD/Image) ? === [[Image(wiki:GD:download_csv.png,25%)]] Once your slice has been instrumentized you will be able to see the graphs via the "Passive Graphs Module". If you cant to save the data into a CSV or RRD format, you can use the "GN View Module" to view and download data for the same graphs directly from the Global Node web server. [[BR]] [[BR]] === 10. Can I save my experiment state for a paper I am about to write ? === Use the "Archive Module" to save the current state of the tables and graphs in to the GENI IRods Archive server . You will need a GENI IRods account prior to using this module which can be obtained using the GENI Portal. The GENIDesktop also provides a way to retrieve and view this archived data as described in [this document]. [[BR]] [[BR]] === 11. SSH from GENIDesktop asks for username/password. What do i enter ? === There is no password set for any GENI accounts on the node. If you see such a prompt, then there is some problem on that GN Node. In the past , we have found that it has mainly occurred when the disk on the Global Node is at 100% capacity due to a bug in the InstaGENI Code. Please email GENI Users mailing list if you encounter this. [[BR]] [[BR]] === 12. I don't know what this button is supposed to do. === We do have extensive help menus for each module. To see this help content , Click on the "?" icon in the top bar of the window opened when the module was launched. For more info you can also visit the [http://groups.geni.net/geni/wiki/GeniDesktop/Manual GENIDesktop Manual] page that describes most of the Modules implemented in the GENIDesktop. [http://groups.geni.net/geni/wiki/GENIExperimenter/Tutorials/GENIDesktop] [[BR]] [[BR]] = __Known Issues__ = [[BR]] === (1) ExoGENI Resources in your slice === !ExoGeni Aggregates (Racks) do not support the GENI AM APIv3. This is required by the GENIDesktop to access you slice resources. So if i. The resources (nodes) in your slice were allocated using any tool other than GENIDesktop. ii. or you are trying to login to a slice that was created at a previous session and not during your today's visit to the GENIDesktop. then you may not be able use this slice at the GENIDesktop. Any new slices with ExoGENI resources you use during your current GENIDesktop session will work. There is currently no workaround for this problem. [[BR]] [[BR]] === (2) Shellinabox (SSH Button) === Shellinabox is the software used by the SSH Module in the GENIDesktop to open ssh sessions to your nodes in the browser. If you have added additional users to your slice after the slice was used at the GENIDesktop, the new users will not have a working SSH session using the GENIDesktop SSH Module. They can however ssh into their node using their ssh clients and ssh keys from their local machines. If you and other users in your slice absolutely require this feature to work for all users, you can enable it at your own risk. Trying to enable this will kill all existing sessions for all other users too. One of the users who has access to the nodes will have to ssh manually (using your native ssh client and ssh keys) to the GDGN node and run the command below [[span(style=color: #FF0000, sudo /usr/testbed/sbin/measure-scripts/siab_action rebuild)]] [[BR]] [[BR]]
