PageOutline = GENI Monitoring How-to = This page provides an overview of the GENI Monitoring system available functions and highlights potential usage scenarios and notes restrictions or potential issues for a user. This sections assumes the user has an account, if you do not have an account see the instructions for Getting an Account page. == GENI Monitoring Layout == When you first login to the GENI Monitoring system you will be presented with the following page: Image(GENIMonMain.jpg, 60%) Functions are as follows: ![1] All monitoring functions are available from the "Main Navigation" in the left side of the page.BR ![2] The "Main Panel" shows status information and initially displays the "Dashboard". BR ![3] Toggle that hides/shows the "Main Navigation" on the left side of the page. Most navigation is possible using the "Main Panel".BR ![4] User ID/Operations. Provides access to "Sign Out" and "Profile" where you can change your password.BR ![5] Allow search within the "Main Panel" area shown.BR ![6] Allows search across all areas of monitoring.BR == Monitoring Data by User Type == The data available to you is based on the user type associated with your account. The following user types are available: - Admin - User has all administrative functions and can see all data - Operator - Has privileges over monitoring data, but no administrative access. - Experimenter - User can only see their own data, and has no access to other user data. Following is a table that highlight which function are available by user type: ||Main Navigation function||Admin||Operator||Experimenter|| ||(User) Administration || Yes || No || No || ||GENI Alerts || Yes || Yes || Yes || ||GENI Objects - Users || Yes || Yes || No || ||GENI Objects - Slices || Yes || Yes || Yes || ||GENI Objects - Slivers || Yes || Yes || Yes || ||GENI Objects - Checks || Yes || Yes || Yes || ||GENI Stores - Aggregates || Yes || Yes || Yes || ||GENI Stores - Authorities || Yes || Yes || Yes || ||GENI Stores - Check Stores || Yes || Yes || Yes || ||GENI Hardware - Nodes || Yes || Yes || Yes || ||GENI Hardware - Interfaces || Yes || Yes || Yes || ||GENI Hardware - Links || Yes || Yes || Yes || ||GENI Hardware - VLANs || Yes || Yes || Yes || == Finding an Experimenter Slice == To find a slices simply select the Dashboard->Slices icon or from the "Main Navigation" choose GENI Objects->Slices . Both result in the "Main Panel" listing all active slices, you may further narrow down your search by typing the project or slice name in the search box at the top right hand corner of the main panel. == Traffic Statistics == If you are interested in traffic statistic for you slice there are two ways to get to statistics for your experiment: you can start with the Slice or start with a VLAN. === Starting with Slice === Select "Slices" and find your slice. Once your slice is select you can see the "Information" window which looks as follows: Image(slice-info.jpg, 60%) This page includes a summary of slice information (URN, creation time, expiration time, etc) and several tabs that provide monitoring functions. The tabs are: - "Map" - Shows a diagram of the monitored components and their relationship within the monitoring system. This __is not__ a topology map. - "Members" - Shows the project members for the slice. - "Slivers" - Show the list of slice slivers being monitored for the slice. To get traffic statistics select the "Slivers" tab and click on the Sliver ID: Image(sliver-tab.jpg,60%) This will results in a list of links associates with the sliver. Select a link to see the associated (interface:VLAN) endpoints. Here are example endpoints: Image(endpoints.jpg,60%) Once of your slice end-points is the AL2S Router (sd-sn.losa.net.internet.edu) and its interface eth5/1 has a VLAN 1565. Selecting the Endpoint ID will results in statistics being shown: Image(report-stats.jpg,80%) Note: You can select the report type to show live data or historical data over specified range. === Starting with VLAN(s) === If you know the VLAN and you want traffic statistics for it, you can simply select GENI Hardware->VLANs and enter your VLAN in the "Search" box in the main panel. Here is an example to look for statistics on VLAN 1565: Image(vlan-search.jpg,60%) Note: Information returned at this time does not combine the view of the AL2S Network Aggregate and the Compute Resource aggregates. If we select the sd-sn.losa.net.internet.edu:eth5/1:1565 we will see same information found in the previous sections which started with the slice name. == GENI External Checks == The GENI Monitoring integrates status information collected from checker applications running in other locations. Once example is the GENI Objects->Checks . This checker runs at the GPO and is intended to eventually capture Campus Status for OpenFlow connections between all GENI sites. This is being worked on and the current check is run from the University of Washington IG to several remotes. Here is the list of OpenFlow Campus Checks for AL2S sites: Image(checks.jpg,70%) Selecting any of the checks returns Ping Time Metrics between the sites described in the Check ID: Image(ping-metric.jpg,70%) == Aggregates Reports == The GENI Monitoring system monitors GENI Aggregates. This function is available by selecting GENI Stores->Aggregates , which reports a list of all monitored aggregates. There are several types of Aggregates: InstaGENI, ExoGENI, OpenGENI, FOAM, Network-Aggregate, WiMAX, and the Stitcher Service. Each of these Aggregate Types reports an "Aggregate History Report" and an "Aggregate Availability" report, which report resource allocation an aggregate availability respectively. == Authorities Reports == The GENI Monitoring system monitors the GENI Clearinghouse for Users and Slices statistics. Clearinghouse information is available by selecting GENI Stores->Authorities . Image(authorities.jpg,70%) Selecting the ch.geni.net authority will show an "Authority History Report" for Users and Slices activity for the date range selected: Image(clearinghouse.jpg,70%) == Nodes Reports == The GENI Hardware->Nodes feature provides a list of all GENI Node resources including VM Serves, Switches and WiMAX for Compute and Network Aggregates. Selecting any of the nodes will show a Node Metrics Report as shown below: Image(node-metrics.jpg,60%) == Interface Reports == The GENI Hardware->Interfaces feature provides a list of all known interfaces including their role (experimental, control) for each rack type and for WiMAX sites. Note: Currently ExoGENI do not report and interface role, and "unknown" is shown in the interface role column. Note: Currently there are no interface statistics only overall node statistics. ---- {}
