GENI Monitoring How-to
This provides and overview of available GENI Monitoring by doing a walk-trough of the system to answer common user questions. Each sections high-light potential ways to answer the user question
GENI Monitoring Layout
When you first login to the GENI Monitoring system, you will be presented with the following page:
Functions are as follows:
[1] All monitoring functions are available from the "Main Navigation" in the left side of the page.

- Admin - User has all administrative functions and can see all data
- Operator - Has privileges over monitoring data, but no administrative access.

Finding an Experimenter Slice
To find a slices simply select the Dashboard->Slices icon or from the "Main Navigation" choose GENI Objects->Slices . Both result in the "Main Panel" listing all active slices, you may further narrow down your search by typing the project or slice name in the search box at the top right hand corner of the main panel.
Traffic Statistics
If you are interested in traffic statistic for you slice there are two ways to get to statistics for your experiment: you can start with the Slice or start with a VLAN.
Starting with Slice
Select "Slices" and find your slice. Once your slice is select you can see the "Information" window which looks as follows:
This page includes a summary of slice information (URN, creation time, expiration time, etc) and several tabs that provide monitoring functions. The tabs are:
- "Map" - Shows a diagram of the monitored components and their relationship within the monitoring system. This is not a topology map.
- "Members" - Shows the project members for the slice.
- "Slivers" - Show the list of slice slivers being monitored for the slice.
To get traffic statistics select the "Slivers" tab and click on the Sliver ID:
This will results in a list of links associates with the sliver. Select a link to see the associated (interface:VLAN) endpoints. Here are example endpoints:
Once of your slice end-points is the AL2S Router (sd-sn.losa.net.internet.edu) and its interface eth5/1 has a VLAN 1564. Selecting the Endpoint ID will results in statistics being shown:
Note: You can select the report type to show live data or historical data over specified range.
Starting with VLAN(s)
If you know the VLAN and you want traffic statistics for it, you can simply select GENI Hardware->VLANs and enter your VLAN in the "Search" box in the main panel. Here is an example to look for statistics on VLAN 1564:
