Setting up your laptop with GENI Tools

Some of the tutorials at this camp will require you have a laptop that has:

  1. The Omni experimenter tool installed,
  2. A browser capable of running Flash clients, and
  3. An ssh client.

1. Install Omni

Mac OS x

  1. Download the package: omniTools.dmg.
  2. Install the package using these instructions.

Windows

  1. Download this file: omni-tools-2.4.2-setup.exe.
  2. Install the package using these instructions.

Linux

  1. Download the GCF package from http://software.geni.net/local-sw/download&software=gcf-2.4.1.tar.gz
  2. Install the GCF package using instructions at http://trac.gpolab.bbn.com/gcf/wiki/QuickStart. The Omni tool is part of the GCF package.

Test the installation

  1. Open a new terminal window (or command prompt in windows (Start menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt)) and type
           omni.py --version

If omni prints out its version number, you are all set!

2. SSH Client

Mac OS X/Linux

Mac OS X and Linux come with an ssh client you can run from a Terminal window. You do not need to install anything.

Windows

If you do not have an ssh client installed:

Note: If you are using the Putty ssh client, you will need puttygen to convert the private keys used by GENI to Putty's format.

Test SSH with keys

In the email you should have received a copy of an SSH private key and the corresponding passphrase. To test your setup you will need these information:

  • username: nriga
  • hostname: pc2.instageni.illinois.edu
  • port: 35386

Mac OS X/Linux

Follow these instructions and use as information:

3. Flash-enabled Browser

  1. You will need Google Chrome or Firefox.
  2. Make sure you are able to load http://protogeni.net/flack. The page should look like:

http://groups.geni.net/geni/attachment/wiki/GENIExperimenter/Graphics/flack-login.png

Note: If you do not have flash installed and you are using Firefox, install the Flash plugin for Firefox.
