Materials and Guidance for leading this exercise: Simple Layer 2 Experiment Using the GENI Portal

If you are planning to lead this as a tutorial, please drop a note to help@geni.net letting us know.

Goals for this exercise

  1. Do a simple but complete GENI experiment using two aggregates connected by a layer 2 circuit (VLAN)
  2. Learn and use 5 GENI terms: experimenter, project, slice, resource, and aggregate
  3. Use the GENI Experimenter Portal

Exercise description

Tutorial Setup

Reserve two VMs across the US from each other connected by a Layer 2 circuit.

Then send layer 2 traffic between these two nodes (without IP).

Exercise materials

  • Slides with notes (ppt) and (pdf)
  • Generic worksheets for use during the exercise (docx) Note: we can make a custom worksheet for your tutorial.
  • Instructions (web) and (pdf)

Prerequisites

In order to participate in this exercise attendees need to have an account at an InCommon institution or from the GPO. If they haven't done so before, please sign in to the GENI Portal.

Make sure each attendee knows which institution will provide them access to GENI and the username and password they need to authenticate. If you don't know, please let us know.

It may be helpful for attendees to have access to their email.

Guidance for leading the tutorial

  1. As soon as possible, e-mail help@geni.net letting us know you are running this tutorial. Doing this will help by:
    1. allowing us to notify GMOC (GENI Operations) that you are running a tutorial
    2. help us deconflict shared resources (we can generate a customized worksheet for your tutorial)
    3. giving us an opportunity to answer any questions you may have and provide any needed support.
  2. If you don't already have the project lead permission in the portal, request it now. You can request the project lead permission via the Home page of the portal.
  3. If you haven't already, read through the slides (including the notes) and work through the tutorial exercise and let us know if you have any questions.
  4. One or two weeks in advance, invite attendees to login to the portal and request an account from the GENI IdP if necessary. This may require some manual intervention, so it's important that people do this early.
  5. One week in advance, e-mail attendees information about any other pre-work. In particular, they will need to be able to ssh using a private key. Drop us a note at help@geni.net if you need help with this step.
  6. One or two days in advance, create a project in the portal. (Note: you must be a project lead to create a project.)
  7. A few hours before the tutorial, invite attendees to join the project and approve their requests (doing this in advance makes the tutorial go more quickly)

At the tutorial, please distribute:

  1. one worksheet to each attendee (or pair of attendees) doing this exercise. The worksheet does three things:
    1. it helps attendees identify the data (and not the control plane interface) which they will bring down during the tutorial
    2. it ensures slice names are unique
    3. it ensures each attendee (or pair of attendees) use different IP addresses and subnets. (The VLAN used in the tutorial is shared and so IPs need to be deconflicted.)
  2. a hardcopy of the instructions
  3. Use the slides to cover the background material needed to do the tutorial
