These instructi= ons are to test if you are able to log into the GENI Portal using the usern= ame and password you use at your home institution, and, in the event that f= ails, to help you request a GENI account.=C2=A0 (Note: GENI never sees your= home institution username and password. For more information on how this w= orks, see=C2=A0http://www.incommon.org/= federation/basics.html.)<= /blockquote>
- Go to=C2=A0https://portal.geni.net=C2=A0and click the big orange "Use = GENI" button.
- On the institution ch= ooser page, select your home institution. The text entry field will auto-co= mplete institutions if you type in a few characters. Or you can choose the = "Show a list of organizations" option and find your institution i= n the drop down box.=C2=A0
IF your institution does not appear here,=C2= =A0STOP=C2=A0and fill out this form:=C2=A0https://shib-idp.geni.net/g= eni/request.html.- Click "Contin= ue". You should be redirected to your home institution's login pag= e.
- Type in your usual home institution U= sername and Password. Again, note this information is not sent to GENI.
- You should be redirected to a GENI agreemen= t page.=C2=A0
IF this does not happen,=C2=A0STOP=C2=A0and fill ou= t this form:=C2=A0https://shib-idp.geni.net/geni/request.html.- On the GENI agreement page, check the two boxes t= hat indicate you agree to all policies and to let the portal work on your b= ehalf. Then "submit" the page.=C2=A0 Congratulations, you're = done!=C2=A0 You should now be at the portal home page and you are ready for= the GENI tutorial.
2. Computer Requirements<= /h3>=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Verify your laptop/= desktop meets these minimum requirements:
- Runs a re= latively recent version of Mac OS X, Windows or Linux.
- 2 GB of memory
- A modern p= rocessor, at least dual core and >1.5 GHz, (no Intel Atom, no netbooks, = no tablets)
- A good connection to the Int= ernet
If you have a choice,= MacOS/Linux machines are preferred as they have built-in ssh tools.=C2=A0<= /span>=If you have a webcam please use it at th= e tutorial---web-based tutorials are much less impersonal if we can see you= r faces!3. Install GENI Tools
= 3.1 Install Browsers
=If not already installed on = your machine, please install these browsers:M= ac OS X and Linux come with an ssh client you can run from a Terminal windo= w. You do not need to install anything. Proceed to the "Test SSH with = keys"=C2=A0se= ction below.=C2= =A0 =C2=A0=C2=A0WindowsRecommended -=C2=A0=C2=A0Install Put= ty, a free SSH client for Windows:

3.3 Test SSH with keys Attached is a copy of an SSH pri= vate key. Follow the instructions below which apply to your Operating Syste= m/Tool. =C2=A0(PuTTY users should use the key file with=C2=A0PUTTY= =C2=A0in it's name)=C2=A0
=C2=A0 =C2=A0=C2=A0Mac OS X/Linux
- Save the NOT_PUTTY version of the pr= ivate key attached to this message on your computer. =C2=A0
- Open a = terminal
- Ensure that your private key has the right permissions by = typing :
chmod 700 <priv= ate_key_file>- Run ssh by typing:
ssh -i <private key location> sshtest@pc3.geni.uchicago.edu= a> -p 328265.=C2=A0 Enter the passphrase (v3rify) when prompted.=C2=A0Note: If you are prompted for a password then something went wrong. Make = sure that all the information is correct.

- You will use= the PUTTY version of the private key attached to this message.=C2=A0 Save = the key on your computer. (It was converted from the standard fromat usi= ng the puttygen program. For more information look=C2=A0here)
- Run PuTTY. =C2=A0
- On the Basic options screen, in the Hos= t Name field enter: =C2=A0sshtest@pc3.geni.uchicago.edu
- In the P= ort field enter: 32826
- Make sure Connection type is: =C2=A0<= b>SSH
- Under the settings categories on the left navigate to Con= nection-> SSH ->Auth.=C2=A0
- Next to the "Priva= te key file for authentication" field at the bottom, click Brow= se... and select the private key file you saved to your computer, and c= lick Open.=C2=A0
- Click Open to establish the SSH conn= ection.
- If prompted about whether you trust the host (key not cache= d in registry), click Yes. =C2=A0
- When prompted for the Passphrase = enter: v3rify
=C2=A0 =C2=A0=C2=A0Windows= FireSSHIf you see the prompt=C2=A0sshtest@test:~$= =C2=A0you are all set!=C2=A0
After you Install= =C2=A0FireSSH=C2=A0:
- Save the NOT_PUTTY version of the private key attached= to this message on your computer.=C2=A0
- Load this URL into fir= efox: =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0ssh://sshtest@pc3.geni.uchicago.e= du:32826
- In the pop-up window, enter the passphrase v3r= ify in the (mislabeled) password field, and click Browse...=C2= =A0
- Select the private key, and click Open.
- Click OK.=C2=A0
- If prompted about whether you trust the host (host k= ey not cached in registry), click Yes. =C2=A0
