GEC 20 GENI Desktop and GEMINI Tutorial

Overview

The GEMINI instrumentation and measurement services enables users to quickly add software to their slice that will automatically measure and monitor network traffic and other information about the slice. GEMINI utilizes the GENI Desktop to view and access the measurement information produced by GEMINI. The GENI Desktop is also integrated with FLACK which can be used to create and modify slices.

This tutorial will begin with a presentation and demonstration of the GENI Desktop and its features and capabilities, along with a demonstration of the measurement information available from the GEMINI measurement services.

Following the presentation and overview, attendees will be given a set of exercises that they will work through individually at their own pace to gain experience using the GENI Desktop and GEMINI. Each exercise is designed to illustrate a different feature, or set of features, of the GENI Desktop and GEMINI. Attendees can work on tasks in any order after the slice has been created, initialized, and instrumentized (Exercise/Task 1).

Introductory Slides

The introductory slides presented at the beginning of the tutorial are available for download as GeniDesktop.pdf and GEMINI_active_measurements.pdf

Prerequisites

The tutorial assumes that attendees already have a GENI Portal account and know how to login and create slices via the GENI Portal or Flack. It also assumes that users have the latest version of Firefox browser or the Google Chrome browser installed on their machine.

NOTE: SAFARI on MAC is not supported. Some Java related features may or may not work due to recent browser issues on Google Chrome.

Alternatively you can obtain a copy of the user workspace from which you can run Firefox and perform other omni operations if needed. Attendees should use Firefox or Google Chrome when interacting with the GENI Desktop. For the purposes of this tutorial we will be using the following example topology. Attendees can create a slice with this topology prior to the start of the tutorial. Note, that when the slice is created, it must be created with the GEMINI extensions enabled.

NOTE: If you plan to do any of the pre-requisites like creating a slice and slivers at the GeniDesktop, here are the instructions to login to the GeniDesktop.

  1. Obtain a copy of the User Workspace if needed
  2. Create a Slice . You can use the Geni Portal or the GeniDesktop to do this.
  3. Setup the example topology using any one of the below mentioned ways.

NOTE: For this tutorial we will be using method (a) to create slice and slivers.

a) Using GeniDesktop
b) Using FLACK at the Geni Portal or the GeniDesktop
