Introduction
Apply your knowledge and skills about GENI, OpenFlow, and general SDN (Software Defined Networking) topics. Develop a vertical handoff experiment between WiFi and WiMAX in the Orbit testbed. Learn how to write custom modules for Floodlight -- a popular OpenFlow controller -- and connect your customized controller with Open vSwitch to implement the framework necessary for the SDN-based vertical handoff.
Pre-Requisites
Basic understanding of:
- GENI
- SDN
- OpenFlow
- Linux terminal
Please Arrive With:
- A GENI Experimenter Portal account
- A laptop with ssh installed. Any operating system will be suitable.
Results
At the conclusion of this tutorial, participants will:
- Perform a vertical handoff between WiFi and WiMAX in the Orbit testbed
- Understand the interrelation of the software components used to perform the handoff
- Floodlight
- Open vSwitch
- OpenVPN
- Initialization and handoff scripts
- Use the Floodlight OpenFlow controller's Static Flow Pusher API
- Become familiar with the internal structure of the Floodlight OpenFlow controller
- Read, understand, and compose basic Bash and Python scripts
