I&M and Monitoring

Schedule

Monday, 1:30-3:00 pm

Session Leaders

Jeanne Ohren, Chaos Golubitsky, Sarah Edwards, GPO

Session Description

The I&M and operational monitoring communities are actively developing tools and collecting data which are of use to experimenters and operators in GENI. This session will discuss the current state of the tools and data used by each of these communities with the goal of allowing and encouraging each to leverage the work done by the other.

In the first part of the session, representatives of operational monitoring, GIMI, and GEMINI will describe their projects with an emphasis on the current state of tools and data which might be of interest to other projects. In particular, GMOC will demo the current state of operational monitoring tools and each of the Spiral 4 I&M projects will discuss their current status.

In the second part of the session, we will discuss what tools and techniques each community has which could be leveraged by the other community. In particular, Jeanne Ohren will set the stage for the discussion by describing examples of tools and data that are strengths of each community and posing questions for discussion.

Synopsis of Session

(Detailed notes for this session are also available.)

First combined I&M and Monitoring GEC session.

There is lots of data being collected in GENI using a variety of tools. We want to share tools and data.

First, shared background on Monitoring and I&M tools:

  • Kevin Bohan demoed GMOC monitoring of GENI slices, resources, and aggregates
  • Anirban Mandal described an XMPP based pub-sub service using GENI client authentication
  • Martin Swany described GEMINI support for active measurements
  • Prasad Calyam provided a case study of experimenter use of active measurement

Second, discussed common concerns.

Jeanne Ohren set the stage by describing some known open questions then lead a discussion ...

Three (perhaps unsurprising) issues in common:

  1. Clock synchronization
  2. Consistent shared naming
  3. Authentication

There are actually 2 distinct types of authentication of interest to this group:

  1. GENI user accessing resources
  2. machine to machine data sharing

Consistent shared naming

  • Example: unique naming of slices
    • URN is human-readable, UUID is unique over time
    • So standardize on both (URN and UUID)
    • AM API v3, monitoring and at least one I&M project have adopted this convention
  • Consistent naming for describing topologies
    • Monitoring, I&M, & stitching communities interested
    • Some ideas may exist and we will discuss after GEC.
