Advanced Topics in Networking Experiments using GENI

Organizer

Niky Riga, GENI Project Office

Time

Tues 3:30 - 5:30 pm

Description

The purpose of this tutorial is to provide an overview of the GENI multi-campus, backbone (layer 2) network, and provide hands-on experience about how to design and conduct experiments that span multiple aggregates. In this tutorial, we are going to use the Omni client which is a command line tool for reserving resources across control frameworks. We are going to go over different type of rspecs used by aggregates and explain the life-cycle of a GENI experiment.

Prerequisites

A basic understanding of GENI concepts (will be covered in the Newcomers' Session) and of GENI experiments (will be covered in the Flack Tutorial). Although not a requirement, it is recommended that attendees are already familiar with Planetlab, ProtoGENI and OpenFlow aggregates.

Please Arrive With:

Laptop with recent version of Virtual Box. If you are unable to bring one you may partner with someone else.

Pre-Work

Note - Please complete this step in advance, as doing it on the day of the tutorial will take up a lot of time.

For Project Name use : Gec11Gpo If you already have an account, you don't need to take this step.

  1. Download and install Virtual Box on the laptop you are using for the tutorial.
  1. Download the VM image. Location for the Image will be announced soon, please check back again before GEC11

Results

After completing this tutorial, you will have will have a working GENI slice that will include resources from different aggregates and you will know how to design and deploy a multi-aggregate experiment in GENI. The account that you create for the tutorial is a real GENI account that you can use to run experiments in GENI, but it will expire on August 15th 2011. If you would like to experiment on GENI after that, please contact as at help@geni.net.
