FIRE
The Future Internet Research & Experimentation (FIRE) project is sponsored by the European Union under the ICT theme of EU Framework Programme 7. It has two related dimensions: Building a European Experimental Facility for Future Internet research, and supporting experimentally-driven advanced research, which defines the challenges for and takes advantage of the dynamically evolving facility.
From the GENI perspective, FIRE combines both research and infrastructure projects. It is thus somewhat equivalent to a combination of the NSF's Network Science and Engineering efforts as well as the GENI project.
FIRE/GENI Workshops
The first FIRE/GENI workshop took place on December 8, 2008, in Madrid, Spain. It was co-organised by the Directorate General for Information Society and Media of the European Commission and National Science Foundation with support of the FIREWorks project and the GENI Project Office.
The meeting's focus was to explore the potential for interconnecting infrastructure in the future.
Speakers included Per Blixt, Head of Unit F4, Information Society and Media, European Commission; Max Lemke, Deputy Head of Unit F4, Information Society and Media, European Commission; Suzanne Iacono, Science Advisor from Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering in National Science Foundation; Ty Znati, Division Director of Networks and Systems at Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering in National Science Foundation; Larry Landweber, advisor to the National Science Foundation; Aaron Falk (GENI Project Office); Marc Fiuczynski (Princeton University); Jeffrey Chase (Duke University); Max Ott (NiCTA); Ted Faber (ISI); Steve Corbato (University of Utah); Serge Fdida (UPMC); Mauro Campanella (GARR); Timur Friedman (UPMC); Thomas Magedanz (Fraunhofer FOKUS); Phuoc Tran-Gia (University of Wuerzburg); Dirk Trossen (BT); Martin May (Thomson); Anastasius Gavras (Eurescom; and
