[[BR]] Two platform designs will span the range of requirements for cognitive radio systems: [[BR]] • stand-alone cognitive radio system, and [[BR]] • infrastructure-class cognitive radio system. [[BR]] These platforms will combine: redesigned frequency-extended radio cards; commodity, one or more off-the-shelf Field Programmable Gate Array systems for digital signal processing; and software based on extensions of an established library that implements “network on chip” functions in FPGAs. [[BR]] Year 1 of the project will emphasize hardware development of a single FPGA system. The software interface provided during year 1 will be a simple “remote radio” system compatible with the Gnu Software Radio framework. This will enable wide-band sampling but may not be suitable for tightly synchronized real-time projects due to the limited interface. In addition to the simplified interface, a “monolithic” RF design using an existing OFDM radio design will be ported to the system; this design will require more sophisticated design tools (VHDL, Simulink, but will provide functionality across the frequency range of the RF boards.[[BR]] Year 2 of the project will emphasize an enhanced software platform and integration with the Orbit Management Framework (OMF). The software platform will take the existing OFDM radio design, split the functionality into components and then interconnect those components using a “network on chip” networking topology. This will allow individual components to be replaced, thus allowing different modulation schemes.[[BR]] Year 3 of the project would involve extending the “network on chip” organization to support multi-FPGA cognitive radio systems, both expanding the number of radio components enabled and the processing capability of the system. Considerable effort in updating the OMF integration will be needed.[[BR]] These systems will be integrated into the ORBIT Management Framework (OMF) that is part of GENI, and tested in campus testbeds, so that they can be utilized by GENI researchers.
