Scope

This proposal will install and maintain a programmable WiMax base station at one of the existing University of Colorado Wide-Area Radio Testbed (WART) wireless network sites. It will use a “GENI WiMax Base Station Kit” provided by Rutgers.

Current Capabilities

  • Base Station is installed at 40.007422,-105.263173 with 120-degree sector pointed towards true-North.
  • As of 6/17/2011, PHY-layer is operational and transmitting, putting 40 dBm into the antenna cable at 2.578 GHz (channel 308) 10 Mhz bandwidth.
  • Demodulation achieved with an Anritsu Spectrum analyzer both at the base of the antenna (CINR =~ 45 dB) and 100m distant in the main lobe (CINR =~ 43 dB).
  • Four other WiMax BSs have been deployed simultaneously and are owned/operated by the university. They are operating at 2.510 GHz (Channel 36), 2.520 GHz (Channel 76), and 2.530 GHz (Channel 116). As of May, 2011, these are transmitting and operational. Connectivity to city buses is currently being debugged.

Step Description Planned Started Completed Comment
1 Identify Outdoor Site on Campus - - X Chosen site is on the roof of the Engineering Center Office Tower (ECOT)
2 Obtain FCC License - - X Operating (legally) at 2.5 GHz
3 Identify Indoor Equipment Room on Campus - - X IDU and ASN-Gateway are located in a wall-mounted NEMA-4 enclosure on the roof.
4 Install Wiring at Outdoor Site and to Indoor Equipment Room - - X Completed by contractor.
5 Install Pole at Outdoor Site and Ground - - X Completed by contractor.
6 Install Antenna at Outdoor Site - - X Completed by contractor. Aimed at true north with 2-degrees mechanical down-tilt.
7 Install Base Station Outdoor Unit - - X Completed by Contractor
8 Complete Wiring at Outdoor Site and to Indoor Equipment Room - - X Completed by Contractor
9 Install Indoor Equipment Racks and Ground - - X Completed by Contractor
10 Install 120VAC and -48VDC Power Feeds and/or Supplies - - X Completed by Contractor
11 Install Base Station Indoor Unit - - X Completed by Contractor
12 Complete Wiring of Base Station Indoor Unit - - X Completed by Contractor
13 Initial Check-Out of Antenna and Base Station Outdoor and Indoor Units - - X Not sure what this means, but yes?
14 Install Ethernet (VLAN) Switch, or Identify Existing Capacity - - X Completed after negotiations with ITS.
15 Install Linux Server(s) and Software - - X Completed with help from Ivan.
16 Connect Backbone Network - - X ASN-Gateway is accessible at 128.138.224.29
17 Provide Reference Client Platform X - - Working with Intel chipset with some agony.
18 Initial Check-Out of Campus WiMAX Testbed X - - PHY-Level measurements demonstrate functionality. Need to try client-connectivity and throughput testing. Still need to get GRE tunnel/routing working.
