S3MONITOR Project Status Report

Period: July 2012 to October 2012

Title: Scalable, Extensible, and Safe Monitoring of GENI Clusters

Authors:

Sonia Fahmy, Purdue University

I. Major accomplishments

A. Milestones achieved

We have completed the third programming exercise for graduate students using GENI, and refined the second exercise. We are also contacting potential instructors to use the exercises in their courses.

B. Deliverables made

The three programming exercises for graduate students using GENI are complete.

II. Description of work performed since last report

A. Activities and findings

We have completed the student handout, instructor manual and solutions for the three programming exercises. The student handouts are available on our wiki page (see C below), whereas the instructor manuals and solutions are available to instructors upon request.

B. Project participants

Sonia Fahmy, Ethan Blanton, Sriharsha Gangam, Purdue University
Puneet Sharma, HP Labs
Sumit Kala, Sarbajit Chatterjee, Deepti Sharma, Prasanthi Gaddam, HP

C. Publications (individual and organizational)

Programming assignment on congestion control performance over GENI: http://groups.geni.net/geni/attachment/wiki/ScalableMonitoring/tcp-geni.pdf

Programming assignment on flow management with OpenFlow on GENI: http://groups.geni.net/geni/attachment/wiki/ScalableMonitoring/openflow-geni.pdf

Programming assignment on content-centric networking on GENI: http://groups.geni.net/geni/attachment/wiki/ScalableMonitoring/ccnx-geni.pdf

D. Outreach activities

Sonia Fahmy is serving as an Area technical program committee (TPC) chair for IEEE ICNP 2012 and IEEE INFOCOM 2013.

Sonia Fahmy and Ethan Blanton discussed the programming exercises developed with a number of faculty members from different institutions via email, phonecalls, and while attending the SIGCOMM 2012 conference.

E. Collaborations

We have had discussions with Christos Papadopoulos and Susmit Shannigrahi from Colorado State University regarding the content-centric networking exercise, and regarding using the developed exercises for the networking class at Colorado State University.

We have had discussions with Prasad Calyam and Marcio Faerman from the Ohio State University regarding developing a resource allocation exercise using the virtual desktop cloud system developed by them.
