VMI-FED Project Status Report

Period: April 1 – June 30, 2010 (Q2 2010)

=Overview=

This QSR documents the progress by the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) for Project Number 1773, Virtual Machine Introspection (VMI) and Development of a Model Federation Framework (MFF) for GENI, a.k.a. VMI-FED.

Over the past few months our project team has worked with ORCA and PlanetLab implementations in order to port VMI tools to these platforms. We have also completed a large scale analysis of the University of Alaska in order to continue our work on the Model Federation Framework. Specifically we have focused our efforts on resource classification systems and incentive models in order to help ease and entice the federation of resources by donators.

I. Major accomplishments

A. Milestones achieved

The University of Alaska resource analysis has been completed along with prototype classification models to be reviewed by GENI researchers and personnel. A document describing these exploits is nearly complete and will be posted by July 15, 2010.

B. Deliverables made

II. Description of work performed during last quarter

A. Activities and findings

We are installing a local implementation of ORCA on UAF servers to pair with our myPLC installation. Once complete, UAF will demonstrate VMI instrumentation and measurement viability on ORCA and myPLC control frameworks at GEC8.

While investigating UA resources we heard system administrators express concerns about federating resources into GENI. E.g. interference with VOIP systems, system security, etc. In order to solicit as many of these concerns as possible a survey has been developed to be distributed to GENI and other organizations in order to get a better understanding of what concerns and expectations people have about the GENI system. D. Outreach activities

GENI team members ran a virtualization bootcamp at the Colloquium for Information System Security Education, June 7-8 in Balitmore, MD. The bootcamp was attended by ~20 computer security educators from around the US. The full-day session explained the advantages of virtualization and some basic information about virtualization and discussed how the Advanced System Security Education, Research, and Training (ASSERT) Lab is being used for GENI Project research and how participants can become involved.

We are developing a federation scenario in which GENI experimenters and resource donors mutually benefit from resources contributed by academia, government agencies, industries, and the public. To this end, we are formulating a strategy to garner acceptance by presenting this scenario to identified parties. Simply stated, we are devising an answer to the predominant resource donor question, "What is in it for me?" By gathering their thoughts on our proposal and soliciting their ideas for GENI services, we will create a vested interest in developing federation standards and incentives, and spark a dialogue to spur GENI federation.

E. Collaborations

UAF GENI researchers are actively working with researchers at Colorado State University to test the VMI components on their equipment and to allow them to assist in testing.

Complete the ORCA installation and prepare a VMI demonstration for GEC8. Present our federation scenario to identified system administrators to demonstrate how GENI may be mutually beneficial for donors and experimenters, and to advance a dialogue on incentives and standards to catalyze GENI federation.
