11am Introductions
Attendees:

Harry Mussman (GPO)
BBN Technologies Tony Michel
PI: Dipankar Raychaudhuri WINLAB, Rutgers University
Sampath Rangarajan NEC Laboratories America
Ivan Seskar WINLAB / Rutgers University
Columbia University (1770) PI: Henning Schulzrinne
Polytechnic Institute of NYU (1751) PI: Thanasis Korakis
UCLA (1797) PI: Giovanni Pau
Wisconsin (1724) PI: Suman Banerjee
UMass Amherst (1731) PI: Brian Lynn
Colorado: (1768) PI: Dirk Grunwald Univ. of Colorado, Boulder

11:05am Update on WiMAX kits: contents, including clients, and schedule for hardware and software

Ivan Seskar (Rutgers WINLAB) and Sampath Rangarajan (NEC)
Sampath: Seven base stations were ordered, profile A, and are now expected to arrive (with a high confidence) by mid-May, 2010. Profile A was choosen to allow the most cutomization. Later orders will be for Profile C stations.
Ray: As these arrive, they will be assembled into kits with software on PCs, and delivered sequentially to campuses. Goal for 2010: deliver two kits to two campuses. Goal for 2011: deliver remaining kits.
Harry: Who wishes to plase an order for additional base station kits? BBN Technologies; University of Wisconsin; others?
Ivan: First clients have arrived: USB dongles.

This is based on the work in the following projects:
ORBIT (1660)

PI: Marco Gruteser WINLAB / Rutgers University
Max Ott NICTA
Ivan Seskar WINLAB / Rutgers University

WiMAX D&P (1657)

PI: Dipankar Raychaudhuri WINLAB, Rutgers University
Sampath Rangarajan NEC Laboratories America
Ivan Seskar WINLAB / Rutgers University

WiMAX Kit (1793)

PI: Dipankar Raychaudhuri WINLAB, Rutgers University
Sampath Rangarajan NEC Laboratories America
Ivan Seskar WINLAB / Rutgers University

11:15am Deployment checklist: steps, known status

Harry Mussman (GPO)
Harry: See list

11:20am It is important that everyone:

1) Apply to the FCC for a license NOW
2) Do a site survey to find a place for your antenna and your testbed equipment NOW

Harry: A campus must have received an FCC license and completed its site survey, before it can receive a kit. It is important that everyone apply for a license now.

A review of experience from these projects, and suggestions for others:

BBN Technologies (pending) Tony Michel
Tony: completed survey and application process, per slides. Applied for two experimental licenses; both are now pending; waiting for response from FCC. If and when received, good for 2 years; then, will need to reapply.

Rutgers WINLAB (done) Ivan Seskar
Ivan: You can specify up to three campus locations in an application, and can then decide on using one, two or even three later.
You should check online for response from FCC, since paperwork comes much later.

NEC Laboratories America (done) Sampath Rangarajan
Sampath: You should be sure to include "GENI MiMAX Meso-Scale Project Overview" to alert FCC to government contract form NSF.

UMass Amherst (pending) Mark Corner and Brian Lynn
See below.

11:40am: Status and plans of all seven GENI WiMAX meso-scale campus deployment projects:

Columbia University (1770) PI: Henning Schulzrinne
Henning: Starting application process with IT. Likely site to be on engineering building, near amateur radio station.

Polytechnic Institute of NYU (1751) PI: Thanasis Korakis
Thanasis: Starting applciation process. Likely site on EE building.

UCLA (1797) PI: Mario Gerla, Giovanni Pau
Givanni: Applying for license. Likely site is top of student housing building, on a hill.

Wisconsin (1724) PI: Suman Banerjee
Suman: Have license, using it with current Cisco base station, owned by Educational Communications Board. Will be applying for a second license. Have three good sites: one for Cisco, one for this kit, and would like to get a second kit for third site.

UMass Amherst (1731) PI: Mark Corner, Brian Lynn
Brian: IT has license that they want to retain. Mark has applied for a second license; pending. Three possible sites: Top of library bduilding, 20 stories, with equipment room in building. Top of graduate research center building, few stories, with equipment room in building. Top of CS building, few stories, without a good equipment room.

Colorado: (1768) PI: Dirk Grunwald Univ. of Colorado, Boulder
Dirk: Have eight sites with 802.11 antennas, ranging from high (6 km range) to low (within clutter of buildings). Another group on campus runs a WiMAX system inside a lab. Staring application process for experimental license. University has leased license to Clearwire, but may some use may still be possible.

BBN Technologies, Cambridge MA Tony Michel is our radio expert; Chaos Golubitsky is responsible for our testbed.
Tony: See above and wiki page. Have applied for two licenses; pending. Site survey completed.

11:50 Wrapup:

Harry and Ivan: Please look at, and provide input to, wiki pages.
Ray: Please think about the research you want to do, and provide email or input on the wiki; can help drive design of kit and software.

Next call?
Yes, do between now and GEC7.
Harry: Pick: Monday, March 1, at 11am.

Meeting, demos at GEC7

Workshop at Rutgers to train campuses?
All: Yes, between GEC7 and GEC8, perhaps in June.

Demos at GEC8 (multiple campuses; Ivan Seskar coordinating)

Demos at GEC9 (multiple campuses; Ivan Seskar coordinating)
