#892 status update for IU OpenFlow workshops GPO task 04/03/12

Hands-on OpenFlow Tutorials Project Status Report

Period: 1-Oct-2011 through 2-Apr-2012

I. Major accomplishments

Developed course materials for hands-on OpenFlow workshop. These are available here: http://incntre.iu.edu/openflow (within the resource box lower right).

Conducted hands-on OpenFlow training January 22, 2012, in conjunction with the ?Joint Techs? meeting in Baton Rouge LA. The workshop provided 27 attendees with hands-on experience building a real OpenFlow environment that included four ethernet switches and multiple instances of OpenFlow controllers and Flowvisors.

Conducted hands-on OpenFlow training during the first week of February for D. Martin Swany?s Network Systems Class at Indiana University. Students engaged in hands-on configuration of an OpenFlow network as well as were presented with an example of how to develop software to implement OpenFlow features using the NOX controller.

A. Milestones achieved

Developed OpenFlow training Materials. Hosted two OpenFlow workshops: Internet2 Joint Techs and Indiana University. PI (Matt Davy), Senior Personnel (Steve Wallace), and Graduate Student (John Meylor) participated in GEC13.

B. Deliverables made

Posted OpenFlow training Materials. Conducted two OpenFlow hands-on workshops, one in coordination with Joint Techs, the second as part of a graduate level Network Systems course offered by Indiana University School of Informatics.

II. Description of work performed during last quarter

Development of course materials, purchase of equipment required to provide the hands-on experience (switches and PC for controller), and conduct a hands-on OpenFlow tutorial.

A. Activities and findings

The experience of conducting OpenFlow hands-on tutorials has led to improvement of the materials to further clarify concepts such as the role of FlowVisor, as well as motivated the inclusion of additional vendor equipment in the tutorial network.

B. Project participants

Matt Davy (PI), Steven Wallace (Senior Personnel), and John Meylor and Uwe Dahlmann (graduate students).

C. Publications (individual and organizational)

All course materials have been published on the InCNTRE web site.

D. Outreach activities

The OpenFlow tutorial was provided to a graduate-level computer science class offered at Indiana University. Future outreach will include on-line version of a subset of the lectures and exercises associated with the tutorial.

Per 4Q09 report:

Inclusion of Million Node GENI (project Seattle) on DOME. We have worked with Justin Cappos of the University of Washington to include Seattle with DOME. Whenever DOME is not running a user experiment, a "default" experiment executes, which includes running the Seattle software within a VM on the buses.

#500 ProtoGENI node documentation pages need updating to reflect switchover from Infinera wave connections to I2 1 GE connections via Juniper switch PROTOGENI task 08/11/10

There are several pages of detailed ProtoGENI node documentation beginning at this home page.

http://groups.geni.net/geni/wiki/Integration

Rob Ricci (copied on this ticket) has updated text and port numbers to reflect changes resulting from the move to 1GE Juniper connections, but the illustrations also need to be updated. Josh Karlin wrote these pages originally, so contact him for any drawings that you don't find in SVN. We also have high-level illustrations from I2 (see Heidi Dempsey if you don't have a copy already).

In addition, I2 has said that they will be supporting ION connections at each ProtoGENI node through the Juniper connections, and documentation on these will have to be added to replace the existing information on DCN on these pages.

#1025 Require some form of authentication? MAXSCS task 05/01/13

Should the Stitching service require authentication with a GENI certificate?

Since the SCS effectively exposes Ad RSpecs, which are currently only available given a valid certificate and user credential from aggregates, it seems the SCS should at least require client authentication with SSL certificates.
